So, what does this mean for your organisation, and what are your options moving forward?
The End of Windows 10 Support
Windows 10 has been a reliable companion for many users since its release in 2015. Windows 11 was released in Microsoft has decided to focus its resources on newer technologies, such as Windows 11, which offers enhanced security features and improved performance. As a result, Windows 10 will no longer receive any feature updates, security updates, non-security updates, or technical support after October 14, 2025.
Windows 11
Windows 11 is the latest release of Microsoft’s Windows operating system (OS). Positioned at launch as the Operating System for hybrid work, the new features introduced focus on:
- Productivity and collaboration,
- IT management efficiency, and
- Security.
On the back end, Windows 11 is built on the same code base as Windows 10, making backward compatibility robust and upgrading enterprise PCs easier.
Microsoft App Assure, gives commitment that applications that run on Windows 10 will run on Windows 11.
What Are Your Options?
If your organisation is still using Windows 10, you have several options to consider before the end-of-support date in 12 months’ time.
- Upgrade to Windows 11: If your hardware is compatible, upgrading to Windows 11 is the most straightforward option. Windows 11 offers a modern interface, better security, and new features that can enhance your computing experience.
- Purchase a New PC: If you have devices that do not meet the requirements for Windows 11, you may need to look at other options – including a move to new devices such as Copilot + PCs or AI PCs. This ensures you have the latest hardware and software, providing a seamless and secure experience.
- Consider Cloud PCs as part of your migration strategy. Services such as Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop. By adopting Cloud PC technology, you may can ensure a smooth transition from Windows 10, maintain productivity, and enhance security, all while managing costs effectively. Windows 365 also provides a cost-effective way to continue to use Windows 10 (should you need to) with inclusive security updates for Windows 10 included in your Windows 365 license.
- Extended Security Updates (ESU): Any organisation that needs to (or prefers) to keep their devices (some of all) on Windows 10 – then Microsoft offers an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. This paid service provides critical security updates for up to three years after the end-of-support date. It will not include any new features or regular technical support or non-security bug-fixes.
- Switch to a Different Operating System: organisations can of course choose to look at alternative operating systems, such as Apple or Linux distribution. Whilst this can be a cost-effective solution, especially for older hardware, for most commercial organisations already invested in Microsoft technology this probably isn’t viable.
- Continue Using Windows 10: While not recommended, you can choose to continue using Windows 10 without updates. However, this option leaves your system vulnerable to security risks and is generally not advisable.
