Last week, we had the honour of sponsoring an incredible Girls in Tech event hosted by Kerry Angel, the IT Director at Harbottle & Lewis, at the Herbert Smith Freehills office in London. The aim of the event is to encourage girls to consider a career in tech, and to educate them in the different areas they could consider whilst also inspiring and guiding them through a male dominated field.
Kerry uses her network to create a diverse panel of women within the tech industry. Mini Biswas, our Modern Work & Security Specialist was one of these women on the panel. She shared a lot of inspiring anecdotes about her own journey and offered the invaluable advice to the students of building a personal brand. Another key aspect that Mini highlighted was the fact that you do not need to be ‘techy’ to work in this industry, a consensus that was supported by the rest of the panel. Of course, there are some roles which require that knowledge, but many simply favour soft skills and the enthusiasm to learn.
My favourite part was the students’ faces when they learnt how much they could earn when working in this industry. I think if they hadn’t considered working in tech before, they definitely did after that! That may have been the reason that sparked so many of them to sign up to Cisilion’s work experience… Many students flocked over to find out what we did as a company and what the work experience would involve. The sheer fact that we were offering it was amazing to them as they informed me it is hard to find companies that provided it these days. I highlighted success stories within Cisilion of employees starting at work experience and eventually becoming team managers. I noticed this inspired them to take more time on their applications and heard many say ‘I hope I get it’ as they walked away from our stand, Cisilion branded cupcake and mints in hand.
As we reflect on International Women’s Day, this event serves as a powerful reminder of the strides that have been made and the work that still needs to be done to ensure equality in the tech industry. It was truly inspiring to see so many talented women come together to empower one another and pave the way for future generations.
We are proud to have been part of such an impactful event and look forward to continuing our support for initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion. Together, we can build a brighter, more inclusive future for all women in tech.
